Our mission is to use science, technology and engineering to develop persistent curiosity and to show that knowledge is empowering.

IRIDESCENT SCIENCE STUDIOS

Iridescent’s science studios in Los Angeles and New York City allow us to reach students and families on a longer term, more consistent basis, and in more creative ways. The studios allow us to purchase and make available an extensive array of science and engineering equipment and to create regional science centers in communities where educational resources are lacking.

Our studios are home to four of our programs:

Be An Inventor:
Be an Inventor is an after school program for elementary (in LA) and middle school (in NYC) students. The students spend two hours a week exploring science and engineering concepts in a fun and hands-on manner. The students are mentored by High School Explainers and the Iridescent staff. Inventors complete their graduation requirement of a science exit project and have the chance to show off what they’ve developed at a culminating Engineering Faire.

High School Explainers:
The Explainers program provides a place for high school students to come to learn engineering, while also learning how to be a teacher and mentor to younger students. The Explainers come to our studios both during the school day and after school. Explainers work on hands-on projects, teach elementary and middle school students, and run activities during our field trips. Students receive internship credit for the program.

Family Science:
The Family Science Program invites students and their families to learn science concepts and design and build projects applying those concepts, while working with university and professional engineering instructors and mentors. Food and translation are provided for families, and everybody gets to take home what they build.

School Field Trips:
Elementary and middle school classes are invited to the studios where students get to work on hands-on engineering activities to get them excited and curious about the world of engineering. Students may build birds, create a speaker out of magnets, cups, and wire, or make a squishy circuit. High School Explainers lead the experiments and the students get to take home what they make.
