Mutual learning model
Both families and engineers benefit from “doing” science together at Family Science programs.
Families experience a positive change in attitudes towards science–realizing how relevant and rewarding it is–while also developing an increased sense of self efficacy–realizing it is accessible as an interest, hobby, or career.
Engineers develop a deeper understanding of their own fields, greater cultural sensitivity, and improved science communication abilities.
Design challenges based on real world problems
Families work together to complete design challenges and master key concepts based on real research or engineering work.
Iridescent design challenges make use of very simple low cost materials. The instructions align with the Next Generation Science Standards.
What does a Family Science Course look like?
Professionals trained in the Engineers and Scientists As Teachers Program share their knowledge with underprivileged students and their parents. Each course consists of 5 sessions, with each session lasting two hours. Courses are held at participating schools with a teacher or administrator usually present along with a Spanish-speaking instructor to translate instructions for non-English speaking families. Food is also provided. Assessments are conducted at every session, along with pre-and post-assessments conducted before and after the course.

We were awarded a five-year longitudinal grant from National Science Foundation to study and scale-up our Family Science program. Check out our Research page to learn more how the program is going.
