TRINITY STREET ELEMENTARY is our favorite success story! Trinity is located in South Los Angeles, where poverty is the norm. Most parents work multiple minimum-wage jobs and do not have the knowledge or resources to support their children’s science education. In 2007-08, the fifth graders' standardized state test scores for science were only 17% proficient. The administration (Patrick Falzone and Mr. Robin Polito-Shuffer) really wanted us to work with their community and so we conducted a Family Science Course in spring 2008 (on Structural Color). Participation was way below normal (4-6 families). In Fall 2008 we resolved to give Trinity another chance and with the administration’s support we hosted another Family Science Course on Animal Locomotion. The course was funded by AAUW (American Association of University Women) and was offered to only girls and their families. Despite this constraint, we had more than 30 families participating at each session! Iridescent is forming strong bonds with the community and we would love to continue working with Trinity students to become 100% proficient in science!
