Spring 2013 Be an Inventor

Be an Inventor, our after school program for 3rd–8th graders, will run March–June on Mondays and Wednesdays this spring. The program gives young Inventors the opportunity to learn useful design and fabrication skills, like soldering, computer-aided design, and handsawing wood, that they then use on projects that they come up with. In previous Be an Inventor sessions, our students have designed and built a lot of different things! For instance:

Sometimes we’re eyeballs for Halloween…

and sometimes we’re inside our own tank made of cardboard, wood, and wheels.

Sometimes we use a drill press or other power tools to get our work done…

but before drilling, cutting, sawing, or whatevering we start by drawing out a plan.

Sometimes we put the antenna on top of a model skyscraper,

and sometimes make a plane that might fly right by that building.

We might decide to take a spin in our very own pedal-powered car,

build a gearbox from scratch,

or make a Dino-Shark even scarier that it already was!

(Here’s the finished Dino-Shark. Keep your fingers away from its mouth!)

All the pieces come together to make the Clean Machine 3000 (a cleaning robot),

and even a working boombox and nightlight.

If you’re interested in joining us for the spring Be an Inventor class please fill out the form below and click submit, or click here to fill it out on another page. If you have any questions, write an email to Bobby or give us a call at the studio at (718) 502-9555.

Spring 2013 Family Science Program

The Iridescent Family Science Program invites students and their families to learn science concepts, and design and build projects applying those concepts, while working with university and professional engineering instructors and mentors.
The NYC studio will be running Family Science Program courses with four schools this spring. Family Science programs are free for schools and families. Dinner and translation are provided for families. For more info, you can contact Paige (paige@iridescentlearning.org) or Devin (devin@iridescentlearning.org), or call the NY studio at (718) 502-9555.

2013 Summer Camp

July 1st-19th –OR– July 29th-August 16th
Everyday from 9:00am-4:00pm, grades 3rd-8th
We are happy to announce that Iridescent will be having science camp this summer! At this camp, we will focus on nature-inspired engineering and draw inventing ideas from the world around us.

Summer camp has different cost levels based on student experience with the program and where they live.

  • Student living outside of Hunts Point without previous experience in our programs: $75/week
  • Student living in Hunts Point without previous experience in our programs: $50/week
  • Student completing 4 out of 5 Spring Family Science Courses: one free week

Currently, we have an interest form for families to complete to help us better understand who would like to attend. Complete the form HERE to let us know your child would like to come to camp.

**Please note, completing the interest form does not guarantee your student a spot at this time. However, it does give us here at Iridescent a better understanding of who would like to attend.
